Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser has been projected as the winner of the Democratic primary for governor, defeating U.S. Senator Michael Bennet.
Weiser, who is term-limited out of the attorney general's office, ran for governor for the first time. This was also Bennet's first attempt at the state's highest office after serving three terms in the U.S. Senate. The primary election was held to determine the Democratic nominee to replace term-limited Democratic Governor Jared Polis.
With over 80% of the expected vote counted, Weiser led Bennet by 10 percentage points, ultimately winning with approximately 55% of the vote to Bennet's 45%. Weiser's campaign focused on his anti-establishment message and his legal battles against the Trump administration, while Bennet emphasized his experience and moderate record.
Weiser's victory positions him as the front-runner in the upcoming general election, where he will face the Republican nominee. The primary results may indicate a competitive Democratic landscape as candidates navigate the balance between establishment and anti-establishment sentiments.
