Melat Kiros, a 29-year-old democratic socialist, has won the Democratic primary in Colorado's 1st Congressional District, defeating long-time incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette.
Kiros's victory is notable as it marks the first time the district will be represented by someone other than DeGette since the mid-1990s. DeGette, who has served in Congress for nearly 30 years, was considered a progressive but faced criticism from the left for accepting corporate PAC money and not adequately addressing urgent political issues.
Kiros received 51.3% of the vote compared to DeGette's 41.7%, with University of Colorado Regent Wanda James receiving 7%. Kiros's campaign was supported by prominent progressive figures and organizations, including Sen. Bernie Sanders and the Democratic Socialists of America. She is expected to face Republican Christy Peterson in the general election on November 3.
Kiros's victory may signal a growing acceptance of democratic socialist candidates within the Democratic Party, particularly in urban areas. This could lead to increased challenges against establishment Democrats in future elections.
