The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has filed lawsuits against Virginia and California, challenging state laws that restrict the sale of certain firearms. The lawsuits were announced on the same day the laws were set to take effect.
In Virginia, the law bans the sale and purchase of certain semi-automatic firearms classified as assault weapons, including AR-15-style rifles. In California, the law restricts the sale of Glock-style pistols that can be converted into fully automatic weapons. Both states had enacted these laws in response to concerns about gun violence.
The DOJ argues that these state laws violate the Second Amendment rights of gun owners. The lawsuits seek permanent injunctions to prevent the enforcement of these laws. Virginia's law was signed by Governor Abigail Spanberger in May, while California's law was signed by Governor Gavin Newsom in October.
The outcome of these lawsuits could have significant implications for gun control measures in the states involved and potentially set precedents for future legislation across the country.
